Human tendencies

Human Tendencies are something which we all possess from as early as Stone Age.  For example, human beings are found with some of the tendencies, like, to explore, to create order, to communicate, to socialize etc. These tendencies are important to each one of us, as it helps us to adapt and survive under different circumstances. According to Dr. Montessori, these tendencies are innate. After years of observation, she inferred how important these tendencies are to construct and refine the world around us and the life within us. They are present throughout our lives, some being stronger during the early years.  All these tendencies exist in each one of us in varying degrees and they guide our development.

Tendencies are not just a part of the child, they are his masters. This inner guide helps the child to learn, to improve, and to master knowledge. As parents, if we understand and respect these tendencies, it helps the child to concentrate, to complete the task he has decided to do, to adapt to choose, to have self control, to be at peace within his self. He grows up having a good self image, high self esteem, and confidence and also will be sensitive towards others.

When these Human Tendencies are blocked, children will exhibit different behavior patterns like temper tantrums, anger, and lack of concentration, violence or extreme shyness. So when we see such changes in behavior, we have to observe the child, understand him, become familiar with his ways and remove any difficulty that may interfere in his interaction with the environment. Study of Human Tendencies will help us use them as markers which assist us in guiding the child on the right route.

Montessori education supports these basic Tendencies which allow the child to explore, to move, to make decisions, to have order, to create, to work, to repeat, to concentrate, to perfect one’s efforts, to express one self, to share with a group, and to develop self control.
